Abigail’s Dedication

Last weekend. Mark & Pam participated in our church’s baby dedication, and we were so excited for them to bring Abby forward to receive blessings from the church.

There were around 20 families that brought infants, babies, toddlers, and pre-schoolers before the congregation to declare that they intended to raise these children in a Godly home and ask for the church’s support in raising them with a strong, deep faith.

Our church doesn’t do baby baptism, but rather offers baptism to those adults and young-children who desire to make a public profession of faith, much like the examples in the Bible. Mark & Pam had asked if I would pray over their family, and it was such a huge honor and blessing to share this special moment with them.  I’m so proud of them as parents, but especially for their commitment to making the teachings of the Bible an important part of Abby’s life.

H’s mom was there, my parents stopped by to see the baby, and even our pastor couldn’t resist the cuteness after the service.

We went outside on a beautiful Mother’s Day Sunday and took a few family portraits to make the occasion.

Abby received a tiny New Testament Bible, and her face totally cracked me up when H was holding her.

At about 2 months old, Abby is starting to make faces and really respond to people- such a great age & we can’t wait to keep watching her grow.

GOOD NEWS OF THE DAY: Having an incredible vacation so far & just started the second half as we switched islands.

Mother’s Day 2013

After Abby’s dedication, we hosted a late lunch for our parents on Mother’s day.  Thankfully we’d prepped most of the food the day before and that morning, so we were able to relax & put out all the food.

We feasted on deviled eggs, spinach dip, 3-bite shrimp, Chapel Hill sausage, buttery nipple shots, baked potatoes, carrots, green beans, and grilled fish.  Hubby made another key-lime pie & totally forgot to get a photo before we dug into it after lunch.

Mom helped H on the girl, the puppies hung out enjoying the beautiful day, John kept an eye on Tiger Wood’s golf , and we all enjoyed a delicious meal.

The requisite family photos came out great this time with our mom’s.  We’re so blessed to have such wonderful, living, giving women who raised us both & we’re both thankful that we get to see them all regularly.

GOOD NEWS OF THE DAY: Of all the places we’ve traveled, I think Tahiti is going to be one of the  most amazing- having an unbelievable time so far!

Building a House

Wanted to give a more personal update than the general construction related ones I’m posting on the house blog at 27thandArlington.com  We hatched this idea in early August & started with all the feasibility planning, budget, architects. and more.  By December, we had the houses vacant & they were both sold and moved off the land.

Permitting took us several months longer than we expected, but we finally got rolling full steam in mid-March when we poured the concrete for the foundation.  After that, we spent most of April framing the first & second floors and the roofs on both houses.

They are just around the corner from hubby’s office, so he checks on the progress several times a week.  I try to get down there at least one a week to document everything with photos.  I often meet him for lunch or schedule meetings with the contractors around his work.

Lately, we’ve been doing down to the Heights on weekends & talking about issues that arise or making decisions on how things need to go.

It was so cool to finally be able to “walk the house” and see each of the rooms, get a sense for how high the ceilings were going to be, watch them make progress every day getting it built.

Lots and lots and LOTS of meetings with the builder (my dad!) discussing the hundreds of details that go into a house.  We’d review the plans, make decisions, and make changes every week.  Here, we are talking about location and styles of the master shower and tub.

We’d ask lots of questions, learn lots of things on how to build a house.  Dad is showing us how the trusses are built, where we are going to put the faux exposed beams in the dining room, and where all the A/C ducts & other utilities will run in the room.

Often our friends or family are with us, checking out the progress too.  We are looking at the fancy front doors that we bought & considering our options for colors on the front metal roof.

Some weeks are better than others & some weeks we encounter lots of *challenges* including how to work out things like venting the chimneys and dryers or where to put in the water/gas/electric meter on a very limited property.

It’s difficult to coordinate schedules with the three of us, so there’s lots of relaying information from dad to me & then me to hubby.  Here, the location of all the recessed lights has been laid out on the ground so that the electrician and HVAC sub-contractors know they need to go around them in the ceiling.

We’re having fun so far- not any huge disasters yet.  We’re amazed that we’re actually doing this & are really pleased so far with how the houses are turning out & the interest we’ve already had in them from buyers.  As of mid-May, they are both almost totally dried in (shingles on roof, siding in place, all windows installed, temporary doors in place, fireplaces installed) and the electrician, plumber, and HVAC guy are all working furiously to get their stuff in place.  Hopefully we’ll start hanging drywall, running trim, and building cabinets by early June.

The guy behind the houses is building an enormous house, with that lake eventually being a pool.  It’s weird going away for a long time- I can’t wait to see all the progress when we get back.

GOOD NEWS OF THE DAY: It’s official- we are off on our vacation to tropical paradise!

Skinny Wine & Book Event

Several weeks ago, I was invited to attend a book & wine event at a local restaurant I’d been dying to try downtown.  Not just wine- but low calorie wine.  And not just another diet book, but one that focuses on real foods for real people. We could taste these new wines & meet the author, Christine Avanti.

The event took place at the patio at Haven, which a very popular restaurant that focuses on locally grown and organic fare.

I was intrigued by this “diet” wine, which was offered in 3 varietals & had fewer calories than regular wine.  I was a bit disappointed that there was actually less alcohol (to reduce the calories), but I was pleasantly surprised by how good the wine tasted.  I tried the Thin Zin, Slim Chardonnay, and the Mini Moscato and the Chardonnay was my favorite, but I thought the Skinny Thin Zin was very drinkable too.

Quite a few people showed up to meet Christine & try the wines.  I was excited to see several familiar Houston bloggers in attendance & had a great time catching up with them.

Christine was lovely to meet- she answered tons of questions and is really passionate about whole foods and getting rid of all the toxic things in our diets.  We snacked on several tasty treats that were from recipes in her book.

It was a really informative event to attend- I learned quite a bit about Christine  her book, and the Skinny wines.  We’ll definitely be headed back to Haven to try dinner there some evening- sans camera crew of course!

I haven’t had a chance to read the book yet, but I’m very much looking forward to it & I know that eating (more) clean is becoming an increasingly important thing to me.

GOOD NEWS OF THE DAY: Hubby is getting some exciting projects at work – always happens right before we head out of town.

I’ve had this “dog” bed for 5+ years & it was about shot!  With 2 dogs, and especially Zoe being sick, I wash it frequently and rotate out the covers/sheets/comforters.  I tucked them in one night & found this the next morning as Mia had probably tried to cover herself, only to realize she could  pull apart the cushion!  Needles to say, after one more “accident” on the bed, the whole futon when into the garbage & the princesses are sleeping on the ground for now.

GOOD NEWS OF THE DAY: Quick & easy trip out to Midland today.
