Athleta Houston Grand Opening

I am a long time huge fan of the women’s sports clothing at Athleta, so I was beyond pumped when I received an invitation to the grand opening of their Houston store.  Not only was I excited to see/touch/try their clothes before buying, but they were hosting a fancy party with drinks & snacks!

Although I arrived about an hour after the start of the event, there was still quite a long line out the front door because they had so many ladies inside all eager to check out the goods.

I LOVED the store- the wooden floors, the windows on 3 sides, the beautiful clothes everywhere.  One of the reasons I adore Athleta is their catalogs feature real athletes and real women modeling their clothes in action- not some boring studio shoot on a supermodel.   They are also very customer-focused, from their in-store yoga classes to their charity work to their presence and responsiveness on social media.

I own waaay too many of their swimsuits & have recently purchased several dresses that I’m loving this summer.  They have such a fantastic selection of colors, patterns, and styles that they are always my first suggestion when anybody is looking for a new swimsuit- especially something sporty.  The open house was packed- long lines to get into the dressing room & a long line for checkout, but all the ladies were so excited to be there & happy to be getting some fabulous new clothes.

I had the opportunity to speak with several of the managers and representatives from corporate about featuring their clothing on Grow Soul Beautiful for our professional yoga photo sessions this fall.  They were all so friendly & you could tell they really loved their jobs, so I hope we can work something out- I’d love to partner with them.   I think they are planning on opening quite a few new stores this year, so check to see if an Athleta is opening near you.

GOOD NEWS OF THE DAY:  Only a few more days without my husband- can’t wait for him to return from India.

Jackson Wedding

Saturday started off with a delicious breakfast from Dan, and then we all hung out at the condo, soaking up the sun and watching the golfers play through on the hole behind us.  The girls started getting ready earlier & I got to hang out with the boys.

The guys couldn’t resist the call of the course for too long & finally ended up hitting a few balls after a few beers….

We sat around, caught up with friends, told stories, and enjoyed a gorgeous day.  My husband always has stories & this is pretty typical of his story-telling faces that I get the joy of seeing often.

I try to stay out of the professional photographer’s way during the ceremony & reception, but I was lucky enough to capture this great shot of all the guys before they headed up to Yacht Club.

I did spend some time with the girls as they got to working on hair & makeup.  Savannha had these awesome cards that all her friends & family had written 12 years ago in high school for her to open up on her wedding day.  It was a hysterical flashback full of funny stories, awesome memories, and priceless photos.

I caught up with the girls before the ceremony for one last toast as all the guests arrived, I happily kept snapping photos.

They had a beautiful sunset ceremony right by the water, and I was sporting 2 cameras and taking photos as quick as I could the entire ceremony.

Savannha had a fabulous custom dress that was fun, funky, and 100% all her personality- I loved it!

We enjoyed a fabulous cocktail hour inside the beautiful club house while the wedding party took all their photos after the ceremony.  I don’t have too many reception photos as I was too busy enjoying myself, but the photobooth was tons of fun & I’ll come back to add those photos here soon.  The food was absolutely delicious, and most of the gang enjoyed a celebratory cigar late in the evening.

The official reception ended around 11 with sparklers and a send-off in Matt’s Mustang, but the party continued for several more hours back at the condos.  The cool evening required a wardrobe of blankets, towels, and robes as we hung out into the early morning hours, and there are only a small portion of the photos that are blog-appropriate.  We thoroughly enjoyed the wedding- the entire weekend, hanging out with friends and family, celebrating their marriage, relaxing and laughing till it hurt.

GOOD NEWS OF THE DAY: Headed to New Orleans & Mississippi for a hot day working.

The Rehearsal Dinner

We started off the 2nd of our back-to-back weddings weekend with a rehearsal dinner at the Bentwater Yacht Club in Conroe.  It was so fun to get to see the reception all set up with beautiful decorations and the sun beaming into the windows, waiting for us to come back 24 hours later in celebration of our good friend’s wedding.

All the wedding party & all their lovely dates were there, ready to kick off a weekend of festivities.

A major thunderstorm had just rolled through the area, but luckily H’s flight arrived in time & all the guests made it safely up to the lake and were ready to practice for the ceremony.

All smiles, lots of laughs, and tons of fun as everybody was so happy for Matt & Savanha.

The actual wedding was to be held outside by the pool & with the view of the lake, but we practiced inside and got to know everybody in the wedding party.

I was super excited to have an excuse to take a million photos and try to capture just the right moment of smiles and laughter.

We all headed around the lake to the country club where Matt’s parent’s have a lovely lake house (and awesome jet skis) where we enjoyed a delicious dinner, some lovely toasts, and wee bit of dancing before heading back to Bentwater to hang out with all our friends for the rest of the night.

GOOD NEWS OF THE DAY: Although I miss my husband mucho, I do enjoy driving his nice new car around!

Brisket & Red Velvet Cake

A few weeks back, H decided to tackle a smoked brisket again on his smoker & also whip up a red velvet cake on Sunday afternoon.  He followed the marinade recipe in the instruction manual, and we soaked 6 lbs. of beef with a tasty topping overnight.

Before heading off to church on Sunday morning, we H placed the brisket out on the grill with more marinade and Mia assumed her favorite position by the back door & begged to go outside to sniff & lick the smoker.

I love before & after photos! The brisket smelled so good all afternoon as it was being smoked- I couldn’t wait for dinner.

It was as delicious as I was hoping, but next time we will need to figure out a better cutting situation, hopefully with an electric knife and some YouTube lessons.

During the afternoon, while the brisket was smoking, he bought all the ingredients and found a video on how to make red velvet cake.

He’s getting quite good at finding all the supplies in our pantry & learning to use all our fancy appliances.  Although he’s baked an apple pie before, I’d really consider this his first foray into real baking.

Lots of great lessons about flouring the pan bottoms, washing tons of dishes, and even using the trick Gram taught me while making pound cake on getting the cake out of then pan after it’s done baking.

I do believe this was probably his biggest kitchen challenge yet to date, with all the various steps involved and skills needed to ice the cake.

His cake turned out delicious & he was quite proud of himself- we even ate a small piece before the brisket!

GOOD NEWS OF THE DAY: Another awesome day of relaxing, visiting with family, and getting caught up.

SS: Strange Bedfellow

Sunday Scribblings #321 Strange Bedfellows

I’ve heard the phrase before Strange Bedfellows & know it refers to opposites working together in some form or fashion.  The wiki entry enlightened me to the origins as a Shakespehere play, and the entertainment industry has been using it ever since in movies and especially in TV series as a show title.

I was just speaking with somebody yesterday about my husband and I both being Aries, which typically do not get along well together in relationships.   We are in may ways opposites, but we seem very much attracted.

As I sat in church today, I was thinking about how my deepening yoga practice deepens my faith.  To many people, those would appear as opposites and differing philosophies, but they work well together for me.  I find the “the church” in general getting in bed with the Republican party to be strange (naive?) bedfellows.

Some may consider Yoga & Photography strange bedfellows at Grow Soul Beautiful, but I’m convinced they compliment each other beautifully and I’m so pumped to encourage others to use photography and yoga to see, believe, and own their beautiful a little more each day.

This is a tough topic!  As I’m attempting to do more writing, I’m increasingly realizing how difficult it is and how much improvement I really need!  As a engineer, math-girl through and though, I’m amused with myself for suddenly wanting to focus on my writing & I even signed up for a writing course this summer & yoga/photography/writing retreat next month!

GOOD NEWS OF THE DAY:  So excited to discover Skype and be able to chat with hubby while he is away- it’s so much fun!
