Mia’s Surgery

*DISCLAIMER* There is a slightly graphic photo below, so stop reading now if you are sensitive.

In early December I noticed a little bump on Mia’s from left paw, so she got hauled into the vet when I took Zoe into have several lumps checked out on her.  The vet gave us a topical spray & that really didn’t seem to improve it over the next few weeks.  Back to the vet we went & were prescribed some oral meds to see if we could get it to resolve itself that way.  After a week of the growth showing no response to the medicines, the vet wanted to remove it.

Sorry about the slightly icky photo, but I thought I’d share what it looks like to others who have something similar can see it. It was about the size of a dime & raised quite a bit away from her paw.  All the fur was gone & she’s occasionally lick at it when it started bleeding.  The vet couldn’t determine if it was a histiocytoma or a masts cell tumor (like Zoe had to have removed many years ago).

So last week, we took her to the vet on Friday morning & I was nervous about it being on such a tricky location on her leg.  The vet was able to remove it easily (it hadn’t grown entangled with her blood vessels or muscle tissue in the area) and I was able to pick her up that afternoon. She was perky & acting like her usual happy, crazy puppy.   I tried to keep her calm & distracted, since we didn’t have an e-collar for her.  The first night, she did cry/whimper quite a bit, but otherwise acted normal- ate her food, ran around, played with toys and wagged her tail.

The pathology on it came back positive- it was just a histiocytoma and they were very happy with all the margins they removed around it.  She kept the bandage on until Monday, but her stiches looked really good & she wasn’t bothering them too much.

This was marathon weekend, so we were mostly around the house doing chores & being lazy, so we were able to keep an eye on her.  The weather was so nice that weekend, both dogs ended up sunbathing outside- a rarity for Zoe who’d much rather be inside on a couch.  Mia went back for her 1 week check & needs some antibiotics, but I think she should get her stitches out this week.

Speaking of Zoe inside on a couch, I had a few photos I snagged with my iPhone I thought I’d share.  Like some of the other photos in this post, they were taken with Instagram & have some more unusual processing- so excuse the colors/shades/tints all over the place in some of these photos.

GOOD NEWS OF THE DAY: 2 weeks from today & I’ll be headed off for our vacation- spending this weekend getting ready!
