Two weeks ago, I met up with some other Houston bloggers to do a little right-brain activity at Merlot 2 Masterpiece on a Friday night. It’s a BYOB night, and everybody set out their snacks and drinks on a table. They had tons of beautiful painting to choose from, but that night we were aiming to paint a beautiful dogwood in front of a moon at sunset.

Joining in the challenge were Britt, Marg, Kim and Kim’s friend Kim. We all started out with a blank canvas and a pice of chalk to get our painting started. The artist took us through step-by-step adding various colors to our rainbow background.

Lots of blending, laughing and not nearly enough time for drinking, we had our background done. It’s funny to see everybody’s personality come out as we all struggled with our own painting and perfectionism. There’s such a temptation to just keep tweaking it- add a little more paint here, keep blending there, re-touch this part.

We had to take a mini-break for the paint to dry and we enjoyed checking out some of the real art hanging in the studio. A little more chalk to get us started on the branches & then we were on our own. I liked the first half with big random strokes & the detail part was much more difficult! My hand-eye coordination isn’t real hot, but I still managed to make a nice painting.

In the end, I loved how everybody’s paintings cam out! They were all great & all so slightly different. I had a blast hanging out with these ladies and I’m so proud of my first real pianting.

I came home and hung it up right away in our dining room. It’s diagonal across they foyer from our South Africa painting and I like hos the colors work together.
GOOD NEWS OF THE DAY: Hubby is headed to Tennessee tonight to participate in his first all-night relay race.

SO FUN!!! I wish I could have gone! Y’alls paintings turned out great – I love that you have it framed and hanging on your wall, artwork is way more fun when it’s your own!

Thanks- I’d been trying to do it too & was glad we finally found a time that worked for everybody.
Sorry girl! It was kind of a last minute thing & I did invited on Twitter. We all had a blast & talked about doing it again- let us know if you see another Groupon or special. Maybe after the holidays, we can plane another painting GTG. Another group I am part of is doing painting at the Mad Potter http://www.meetup.com/houstonsocialites/events/39249242/
Wish you could have made it too- I have lots of my own photos hanging around the house, but for some reason I consider a painting more “art” that those.
