Denver Rock n Roll Preparations

I made it to Denver and will hopefully have more time to blog this weekend as I plan to take it slow and hang out with my family.  I thought running the Denver Rock n Roll marathon would be great to pick up another heavy medal and also to see my family, plus I’m all over any reason to go to Colorado.  No big plans this weekend for us other than hitting the Expo tomorrow & I plan on doing lots of catching up on various projects.  We’re going to have some family pictures tomorrow if the weather holds out & of course I might try to sneak away to the mountains one afternoon.

This is only the 2nd year that the Denver marathon has been organized by Rock n Roll. I found quite a few reviews and recaps below that were fairly mixed.  I think they did some re-designing to the course this year and it looks REALLY flat.  I’m nervous enough about running at over 5,000 feet, but I’ve run some longer runs in Denver before and been ok and I also did some running 2 weeks ago when I was in town for my photography GTG.  I’ve got about 60 hours in town & I’m going to be sucking down the water, so hopefully I can get somewhat acclimated to the altitude before the race.   My parents are going to drop me off and meet me a few places on the course, so I’m looking forward to not racing this one alone.

My training over the heat of the summer has gone well. I’ve always stuck to a fairly minimal  training schedule, especially since I ran 3 marathons this spring.  I did an 18 and a  20 mile run, plus ran the Philly half 3 weeks ago.  I’m mostly feeling a little bit under the weather at the moment, so I’m hoping those issues clear up by the race on Sunday. I’m looking forward to the expo since I actually get to pick up my heavy medal
instead to wait on it in the mail & I’m planning to do a little shopping at the Brooks tent to get access to the VIP potties.

Ooooh, I hope our weather cooperates. Not looking too nice for the weekend right now. Also, with the altitude, I would suggest forgoing alcohol until after the race. It makes the effects of altitude sickness worse. Good luck on Sunday!!!

Thanks for linking to my blog!

I really liked the half last year and would be running the full this year if it weren’t for a stupid IT band injury. The course is really flat and it looks like the last half mile of the full is also downhill. My major complaint was with squeezing everything into Civic Park. I really hope they figured out how to best arrange the port-o-potties, bag check, etc this year.

Good luck! (and fingers crossed the rain stays away!)

You are welcome- thanks for the review, it’s always good to do a little recon work and see what I’m facing. I’m so thankful it is flat & I think I’m going to do the Brook VIP bathroom thing so I can skip the long lines. Now just crossing my fingers for good weather :)

Thanks! Me too- it wasn’t looking this gloomy all week, but it’s getting colder and wetter by the day! I might have to buy some more layers and hand warmers.

Thanks for your review- I included it in my post for others to find. The course does look like it has some excessive turns, but I’m slow and it shouldn’t bother me.

  7. Can’t wait to read your recap and see your pics! I don’t know that I could ever do a race in Denver. Funny thing is that we lived there for just short of 2 years when I was a kid and I don’t recall the altitude bothering me. A few years ago I went to Breckenridge for Oktoberfest and nearly died (slight exaggeration), but I know it is higher there.

I am terribly jealous of the Denver trip, though…you are the 4th person I know who has traveled there in the past couple of months and everyone makes me want to go back…STAT!
