Surfing Costa Rica

Probably the most favorite activity that we did on our entire trip was surf lessons!  I’d been eyeing it on the list of things to do in Tamarindo, as that is one of the main things that the town is known for tourists coming to do.

I was a little nervous & very intimadated to start with, but Los Altos hooked us up with an awesome instructor- Rudy Diaz.  He provided the beginner boards & had us start out practicing our “jump up” for a few minutes to work on our technique.

As soon as we hit the water, the skies opened up and it started pouring- you can see the darkness and rain in the waves.  IT WAS AMAZING!  So exhilarating to be out there in the surf, rain falling down all around you, the thrill of catching a wave.  Yes, I did manage quite a few spectacular spills, but we loved it!  Soon the thunder & lightening forced us to call it quits after an hour, but we quickly re-booked another lesson so we could try some more.  And um yea, notice I was facing the wrong way (to the left) instead of to the right & probably the main reason I went tumbling down.

Rudy’s wife was on the beach & she did a great job capturing all the photos.  I was really surprised at how quickly I was able to get up & H was surfing in no time.  We’d lay on the board & Rudy would position us forward when a wave was coming & give us a little push to get us started so we could hop up.

In case you are wondering, proper surfing technique does NOT involved sticking your behind in the air and bending at the waist.  I should be upright & squatting lower on my legs for better balance.

Seriously the best thing we did on our entire trip- really affordable & such a rush to be out riding the waves.  I was so proud of hubby- he did amazing & was even starting to paddle with the waves to catch them himself near the end.

GOOD NEWS OF THE DAY: Headed from Corpus through Houston to Austin for the night.

I was worried too- considering I can barely walk around on dry land without tripping. I loved the surfing, but just being out in the waves & especially in the middle of the storm was the most amazing thing.

  3. It is so great to have pictures of you surfing!, nex time you come to Costa Rica, go down the Nicoya Peninsula, Santa Teresa has really nice waves for beginners from dicember-may. Have fun!
