One of the very first things we signed up for was rappelling down the waterfalls. The resort arranged for the tour & we were picked up and taken to the main offices of Pure Trek Canyoning in La Fortuna.

We were transported a little outside of town in regular cars & then transferred to a more rugged vehicle to get to the top of the falls. We were fitted with our harnesses, given helmets & very little direction before setting out along a path to the first jump. We were given a few basic instructions & told to just lean back into our harness to go down.

The first descent is the largest- maybe 100 m? I can’t remember exactly, but we all took the plunge! It was scary, but not as bad as I thought it would be since they guides were excellent with safety & giving us instructions.

Descent 1 is beside a waterfall & I tried to get a few shots from below with my little P&S camera, but they didn’t come out too well. In the photo on the right, the tiny person coming down the rope gives perspective on how big the drop really was. One of the great things about this tour was that we had a photographer with us the entire time- sometimes he’d stay up top to watch us go down & other times he’d go down first to get shots of us coming down from above.

The second descent was a dry one, but the rest were all wet as we went down the middle of the waterfalls.

The geography and topography of this area was stunning. The waterfalls & river- surrounded by tree covered cliffs soaring hundreds of miles above you as you tried to take in all the beauty will being nervous about taking hte plunge.

The photographer got some awesome shots & we were having a great time with our group, which was nice and small at 10 people. They said they can do this with 50+, but I imagine it’s crazy and chaotic with that many people

At the 4th waterfall, the guides had a surprise for us as one of them would actually lay in the river and block the water for a few seconds until the rappeller reached a certain point. They’d hop up quickly & let a rush of water just pummel the person below.

The last waterfall was another fun one right into the middle of the flowing water. This was a great excursion & we had so much fun. It was only $25 to get all our photos, so I was SOOO thankful we had these since mine turned our terrible. The excursion included a local fare lunch before we started & they even had cookies & beer when we returned to camp to change clothes. Our guides were extremely professional & very friendly- I’d highly recommend Pure Trek.
GOOD NEWS OF THE DAY: Squeezed in a short swim this morning before I start Sunday afternoon errands.

I’ve shown Jonathan your Costa Rica pictures and we are really starting to think about going for our honeymoon next summer!
That looks like a blast! I love the pics with you laughing because it just shows how much fun you were having!!! I also love the pic with you, your hubby, and that other dude…you all have such a contemplative look on your respective faces.

That first photo cracks me up- we all look so silly that it looks staged. The rappelling was probably the 2nd best thing we did & so much fun because you are forced to get over your fear and it feels amazing to be doing something so thrilling.
