Review: Midwives

Finally picked up a fiction book & rolled through Midwives in a few days thanks to a work trip with a bum laptop.  As I’m approaching that age where all my friends are having babies & I’m getting immersed into the world of child birth and raising kids, I was attracted to the story of a midwife’s delivery gone wrong.  Both my brother & sister were born at home with a midwife and I’ve become very suspicious of the ‘normal’ labor and delivery procedures at most traditional hospitals over the last decades.

Set in 1981 rural Vermont, I really liked the story of Sybil Danforth’s tragedy as told through her teenage daughter.  Through Sybil’s short journal entries, the impacts on the pregnant mother, the midwife, and the families are told through flashbacks and memories from the fateful night that haunted a town to the vivid details of the emotional trial.  The story was both informative as well as entertaining while discussing issues that nearly every woman will face if they birth a child.  I don’t think that a home birth would ever be right for me, but I certainly do respect a woman’s right to choose where to labor and I support commonsense regulations on midvwives or those who assist a woman with labor and delivery.   Although you know early on in the book that the delivery ends tragically, the book remains suspenseful as the family prepares for a criminal trial and seeks to vindicate Sybil.

I’d love to give this book away to a reader who is interested in it!  Just leave me a comment & recommend one of your favorite books that I can add to my pile.  Leave a comment by Sunday at 8 PM CST & will pick a winner at random.

  1. I’m always looking for new books to read or listen to. I had not heard of this one yet. I often get behind the bandwagon on some. I am just now listening to The Help by Kathryn Stockett. Have you read it yet? Oh it is so very good. Normally I like to talk on my phone while driving (if not listening to an audio book), but this book is so good, I’m getting annoyed when someone calls me while I’m in the car. haha! I also recommend The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society.
