The San Diego Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon is only about 5 weeks after the Nashville Marathon in late April. It’s been a busy few months & I haven’t done any long training runs in several weeks. I think I managed to log a 10 or 12 mile run 2 weeks after Nashville. Life has been crazy as usual & I’ve been consistent with my Monday & Wednesday runs followed by Yoga. I’ve hopped on the treadmill whenever I had a chance to prepare for more hills & we headed out on a Friday afternoon flight to San Diego.

It’s a super short trip & we originally planed to spend Saturday sightseeing & Sunday afternoon checking out another baseball park for hubby before heading home on Monday. Due to last minute work projects that necessitated us coming home on a 5PM flight on Sunday, we will see if we can sneak into the 3:30 game after I tackle 26 miles on Sunday. I checked out the blogosphere to read others’ reviews of the race & took away a few tidbits: long LONG lines at the start line bathrooms, a brutal stretch on an incline & cambered freeway, Fiesta Island will probably suck & crazy crowded chaos at the finish line with trolleys, parking & spectators in a small area. I saved a few of the race reviews I browsed-

The course looks pretty interesting- I should be able to walk the ~1.5 miles to the start line from our hotel. Hubby says he’ll drive me, but we shall see. I plan on running through Balboa Park & then having meeting #1 with H around mile 8 and near our hotel. He will hopefully catch the trolley up to meet me at mile 12 & then it’s all nuts after that when the half and full marathons reunite & then everybody hugs the coast and piles onto Seaworld.

It’s hart to compare elevation profiles between race, but my treadmill did come in handy. After running 6 mph (10 min/mile) for 1 miles at 4% incline, I had ascended 205′ in elevation. So roughly measuring off that slope, none of these hills look too bad. I think the log hill from mile 6 to 10 is the leaving the waterfront & the freeway part. I’m not too concerned about the hills here & glad that the second half looks fairly flat.

Packing my bag & especially my run package, I thought I’d share what I need to prepare for a marathon. I skip the Gu’s and gels and gobble up the solid foods. In my fuel belt with water & Gatorade, I carry peanut butter crackers, Melba toast, peanut butter M&M’s. I take my Body glide to help with blisters and my Garmin is on my wrist at all time. Not pictured- individually wrapped tylenol, skittles, chapstick, glucose tablets, iPhone, individually wrapped baby wipes for the bathroom stops, and my PB&J sandwiches. I probably won’t start out with my hat or sunglasses since the gun fires at 6:00 and I can have hubby care them with me. I’ve never run with my iPhone before but I think I want to have my music, the camera and ability to chat with my friends while passing the time.
GOOD NEWS OF THE DAY: Shaping up to the a gorgeous day here in San Diego- I’m feeling great & exited to get going!

You’re so prepared! Wait so did you do it already? How did it go? I need details!
stoppingfordaisies recently posted..How laziness can be good…
Thanks! I rocked out with a new PR at 4:39 yesterday
)) WHOOT…took tons of photos & will hopefully have a post up by this weekend about it (I managed to do most of the writing on the plane flight home). We took 700+ photo in SD that I have to get through & I just finished up photos from Memorial day weekend tonight.
Congrats on a new PR!!! What kind of fuel belt do you wear that allows you to stash so many goodies? I’m curious!
Thanks! I’ve been using a Fuelbelt 4 bottle for several years. I usually carry 4 bottles (some combo of water and gatorade) & I stuck 2 pouches on it (small & large). There will be a few pics of me when I do my race recap. Here is one in pink
