So everything I knew about Baltimore, I’d learned from watching The Wire. I was both nervous & excited to check out the town. I’d received lots of recommendations about places to check out, but only had 1 afternoon with good weather to explore. Due to confusion about the traffic & parking, I ended up at the Inner Harbor area walking along the waterfront. I’m a flag lover (thanks to Best of Wikipedia, I know there is a name for the study of flags- Vexillology) and I don’t think I’d ever seen a Maryland flag before.

I quickly found the first parking garage in sight & set out walking with my camera. I love traveling to older cities, with their magnificent and historical buildings like this massive brick structure that had been converted (I assume?) into apartments. It was sitting right along side a lovely canal out into the main harbor.

I don’t think I ever really *knew* that Baltimore was right on the water- or at least that the downtown sat right at the water’s edge. There’s just something tranquil and calming about being near to water.

In this area, there are tons of museums and restaurants in close proximity to the convention center & lots of high-rise buildings.

Approaching another side-canal, I swooned over yet another impressive re-purposed brick building.

Everything in Houston is so new & modern that I’m just thrilled to see business in other cities using and maintaining historic buildings like these.

And it wouldn’t be a water front without a lot of boats- most of which were museums.

If I would have had more time, I would have loved to tour the U.S.S. Taney, which was the last surviving ship from Pearl Harbor.

There were some very cool & modern museums in this area & this modern walking bridge was a neat way to get between them.

This is the backside of the National Aquarium (which I didn’t even know we had!), which consists of 3 large buildings/exhibits that I’ve got more photos of next post.

I started to check out Little Italy & wanted to wander towards my initial destination (Fell’s Point), but this adorable brick road was as far as I made it before getting too cold & hungry.
GOOD NEWS OF THE DAY: I am officially extending my June work trip to Tahoe to include a pre-stop in Seattle for a long weekend!

Many years ago, after seeing “Sleepless in Seattle”, I decided that someday I’d get to Baltimore. I’d forgotten all about that until now. Your lovely photos make me, once again, vow to see this fine city!

I love when visiting a city changes my impression or thoughts about it- there are so many places that would never be on my *list* to visit, but once you get there- there really are some neat things to see and do.
