SS: Free

Sunday Scribblings #259 Free: You can talk the prompt this week in one of two ways, you can either use ‘free’ or make it a bit bigger and try ‘freedom’..

Free is such a far-ranging topic- so little (nothing) and yet represents so much.

I’m a firm believer in the cliche that there’s no such thing as a free lunch.  Perhaps somebody else might be paying, but, especially in the last few years, I have come to value my time almost as much as money.  I only have 24 hours in every day & I have to figure out the best way to spend them so that I am keeping up with all my responsibilities and finding time to chase my dreams.

In another context, I always try to remember that free does NOT equal worthless.  In the most striking example, salvation is offered freely to all who believe in Jesus, but it’s the most valuable thing any person can every claim. I will add that my ultimate freedom is paid for in blood & no matter what happens on this Earth, I am free to let it roll off my back and know that heaven waits for me.

I recently finished reading my book for March & the premise of the book is that Americans so value their freedoms that they have become arrogant and complacent.  We claim that we are so free & have all these freedoms, but to do what?  What exactly does that freedom entail?  Free to make money & have any job we choose.  Free to live anywhere & love anybody we want (well, we’re still working on some legal aspects there, but I’m certain we will move beyond restricting love to the opposite sex soon enough).  Free to eat what we want & say whatever we want.  But at the end of the day, have all the freedoms made us happier and more content?  Is unrestricted freedom the the ultimate goal for all human kind or is there something more meaningful out there?

The number of people around the world who are not free is heartbreaking.  They are caught in the middle of wars, stuck in areas of drought or famine, the tens of thousands of children and women who are sold in to slavery every year is sickening.  There are so many people that dream of being free & I feel so helpless to do anything about their circumstances.  I do what I can in my community and through my church to end poverty & invest in education, especially the spread of the Good News.  I don’t ever want to take my freedoms for granted when millions of people are in bondage and strife everyday.

GOOD NEWS OF THE DAY: Got my Jeep all maintenanced  up & had lunch with the family today.
