Seeing as hubby & I are both on planes today, I though I’d finish off my last set of airplane photos from over the great American Southwest. Sadly, I haven’t traveled the US as much as I’d like to & I’ve never been to one of the most spectacular natural wonders in our entire country- the Grand Canyon!

Flying in to Vegas on a clear day though, you can get a brief glimpse of it on the right side of the plane. Several years back, our flight to Reno took us right over it.

One of my new favorite photos for this year! The stunning colors & the way the earth suddenly disappears a mile deep really makes me want to get out to do proper tour of this natural wonder tens of thousands of years in the making.

This wide-angle shot shows how far away the Grand Canyon actually was, but I love having my 200mm zoom lens on & then cropping the photo even a bit tighter to get the canyon to fill up the whole photo.

We started flying over some smaller, but still beautiful, canyons that were just catching the early morning sun rising on their sheer walls.

I marvel at the vast flatness, suddenly interrupted by a dizzying drop full of colors & textures.

All sorts of stuff going on here- flats, hills, rounded & jagged earth spreading out for miles in every direction.

Marveling at all the different layers & formations, how sometimes the walls are steep & sheer and some places it’s rocky & gradually sloping almost make me wish I’d taken a geology class in college to unlock the mysteries and marvels the canyons.

We have some similar rock formations in Texas and they are called Spanish skirts as they resemble the vibrant colors found in the ladies’ clothing.

This was seriously better than any show on the inf-light entertainment system & so much fun to fly over cool places while flying- it just gives me a whole new appreciation for the terrain & earth below me.
GOOD NEWS OF THE DAY: Headed to Missouri (checking off another state on my list!) & might get a chance to run there too.

You’re so lucky getting to travel so much! Thanks for sharing these photos. I especially love the one where you can see the curvature of the Earth. I’ve never been to the Grand Canyon; it looks beautiful.
