Sunday Scribblings #255: Food In two-hundred and fifty-four prompts, I can’t believe we’ve never simply discussed food.

MMM! Food- what a great topic. It’s something so simple & ordinary that we rarely really think about it. We probably put food into our bodies several times day & it’s only in the last few months, after reading In Defense of Food & following a few more health bloggers, that I’ve really started to pay attention to food more closely. There are dozens of aspect written about the psychological relationships with food & how people use (and abuse) food. There are tens of thousands of cookbooks and websites about how to make food. Given the FDA’s recent revision of the food pyramid into a plate with more fruits & veggies, I’ve been working on eating more (whole) foods that are unprocessed & chemical-free, but I’ve got a long way to go.
I came across this perfectly timed blog about being a foodie, and I don’t think I actually qualify. I do love to eat, but I’m not uber-adventurous about my eating choices & I am a pretty lousy cook. I get stressed out by meal planning, grocery shopping, coordinating dinners with hubby, pulling off a gourmet meal & then doing the dishes. I really *want* to be a better chef, but I don’t see that happening anytime soon. I did alright with my pre-made dinners, and have a few standard meals we make- spaghetti, burgers, tuna casserole, grilled chicken or pork, meatloaf, breakfast for dinner. Yea, it’s a pretty sad list looking at it typed out there. The unfortunate reality is that we eat meals at restaurants waaay more than I’d like. Our list of “usual” restaurants is probably longer than my list of meals. <sad face> Between our busy schedules, fast food, sandwiches and frozen dinners make up a large portion of our nightly meals. I’m pretty healthy before dinner- usually a low-carb bagel, low-sodium V8 or some yogurt in the morning. I take my lunch to work 95% of the time & it’s almost always a turkey sandwich and popcorn or an apple.
GOOD NEWS OF THE DAY: We stayed home for dinner last night & enjoyed steak and shrimp in our backyard.
