Hiking on Fox Glacier

After the spectacular helicopter flight up to Fox Glacier, we were excited to start our hike around it. The guys from Fox Glacier Guides immediately set out for the waterfall.

In addition to the big waterfall, there were several smaller waterfalls on the cliffs around and above us.

I’d say our group size was about 20, with 2 guides, and I don’t think most people would have any problems on the glacier unless you already have mobility issues. We moved slow, had spikes on our shoes & handy walking sticks that made navigating the glacier pretty easy.

We hiked past numerous deep crevasses….

Looking back up the mountain towards the top, with the ice field looming over head, was just spectacular.

Hello hot husband! He was super sweet on the glacier waiting for me to take pictures & make sure my clumsy self didn’t fall.

The guides would find the best path for the group & then often have to carve out steps with their ice picks.

As we approached the waterfall, we started seeing a cool cloud- fog? mist? hovering just above the glacier.

Early morning is also a great time for sun flare!

All the different textures, shapes, patterns, surfaces and colors were amazing to see.

Our group trekking across the glacier towards the waterfall.

We started seeing lots of little mini ice-caves, they usually had some really cool colors.

Bring water! You get thirsty up there, but it’s pretty easy to find some clean glacier ice without rock to eat on.

Near the waterfall, there were some extremely dramatic ice fragments where the glacier was colliding with the mountain walls & being broken apart.

We were able to cover a pretty good distance across the glacier & got fairly close to the waterfall.

FGG provides some really cool socks to keep your feet warm & to wrap the spike straps around your shins.

We ran across quite a few little streams winding their way down the glacier.

I loved all the dramatic ice sculpture and mountains with interesting rock patterns embedded into them.

One of the ice caves was big enough that we could go inside and have the roof drip down on us.

It was so weird being here- I felt like we were at the edge of the world where you couldn’t see down the hole & clouds shrouded everything in mystery.
Stunning, stunning, stunning!

The blue in the ice was incredible with the sun shining on it.

I captured some more great shots on our flight out….you can almost see the flow of the ice.
At the glacier’s face, there had been lots of melt and a great deal of deposited rock on the sides.
Apparently there are some really neat short hikes around the face/base of Fox Glacier.
One of the other remakable things about Fox Glacier is how close it is to the sea- Mt Cook rises up to over 12,000 feet just a few miles inland.
Hubby was kind enough to take the back seat so I could have better photos from the front.

Just thought that Fox Glacier looked so cool and impressive from space that I wanted to include it.

GOOD NEWS OF THE DAY: Lots of my friends got into the Houston marathon lottery!
